Small-for-gestational-age (sga) newborn
A newborn who weighs less than 90% of newborns of the same gestational age at birth (below the 10th percentile) is considered small for gestational age.
- Newborns may be small because their parents are small, the placenta did not function normally, or the mother has a medical disorder or has used drugs, smoked, or consumed alcohol during the pregnancy.
- Unless they are born with an infection or have a genetic disorder, most small-for-gestational-age newborns have no symptoms and do well.
- Some small newborns remain small as adults.
Gestational age refers to how far along the fetus is. The gestational age is the number of weeks between the first day of the mother

Toxoplasmosis in newborns
Toxoplasmosis is infection with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It usually does not cause problems in healthy adults, but it can cause serious illness in newborns and in people with a weakened immune system.
Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite that lives and multiplies in cats.
A fetus may be born prematurely, and a newborn may have problems such as a small head or an enlarged liver.
Blood tests and tests of other fluids can be done to detect the infection in the fetus, newborn, or mother.
The infection may cause death in some children and long-term neurologic problems in others.
Pregnant women should avoid cat litter and should thoroughly cook meat before eating it.
Antiparasitic drugs may be given to fetuses or newborns to treat the infection.(See also Overview of Infections in Newborns and Toxoplasmosis in adults.)
The Toxoplasma gondii parasite lives and multiplies mainly in cats, and its eggs are shed in cat feces. Cat feces can contaminate food, soil, and water. Pregnant women become infected if they swallow Toxoplasma eggs after they touch contaminated cat litter, soil, or other objects and then touch their mouth or handle and eat food without washing their hands. Pregnant women can also become infected if they consume raw or undercooked meat or other foods that are contaminated. Fetuses become infected if Toxoplasma gondii crosses the placenta (the organ that provides nourishment to the fetus) during pregnancy.
Women who were infected before pregnancy typically do not pass the parasite on to their fetus unless their immune system has been weakened (for example, by HIV infection), reactivating the infection.
Infection in the fetus is more severe if the fetus is infected earlier in pregnancy. -

RE: Measles
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that causes various cold-like symptoms and a characteristic rash.
Measles is caused by a virus.
Symptoms include fever, runny nose, hacking cough, red eyes, and a red itchy rash.
The diagnosis is based on typical symptoms and the characteristic rash.
Although the majority of children recover, occasionally measles can be fatal or lead to brain damage.
Routine vaccination can prevent the infection.
Treatment is aimed at relieving symptoms. Before measles vaccination became widely available, measles epidemics occurred every 2 or 3 years, particularly in preschool-aged and school-aged children. Small, localized outbreaks occurred during the other years. Measles is still common in other countries. Worldwide, each year, measles infects about 20 million people and causes about 110,000 deaths, primarily in children. In the United States, measles is uncommon because of routine childhood vaccination. From 2000 to 2007, an average of only 63 cases per year were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Now, however, measles cases are increasing in the United States. In the first 6 months of 2019, over 1,000 cases of measles were reported to the CDC. This increase is the result of fewer children receiving the measles vaccine and the result of infection that is spread by travelers or immigrants from areas where measles is more common. Infection that is spread by travelers or immigrants especially occurs in places where many people group together (such as college campuses) or communities that limit contact with outsiders (such as traditional-observant Jewish communities, Amish, and Mennonites).
A woman who has had measles or has been vaccinated passes immunity (in the form of antibodies) to her child. This immunity lasts for most of the first year of life. Thereafter, however, susceptibility to measles is high unless vaccination is given. A person who has had measles develops immunity and typically cannot contract it again.
Children become infected with measles by breathing in small airborne droplets of moisture coughed out by an infected person. About 90% of people who are not immune to measles develop the disease after they are exposed to a person with measles. Measles is contagious from several days before until several days after the rash appears. -

Acute mesenteric ischemia
Acute mesenteric ischemia is sudden blockage of blood flow to part of the intestines, which may lead to gangrene and perforation (puncture).
Severe abdominal pain develops suddenly.
Angiography may be performed.
Immediate treatment is needed using angiography or surgery.(See Overview of Gastrointestinal Emergencies.)
Acute mesenteric ischemia has multiple causes. The most common areArterial embolism
Arterial thrombusArterial embolism is a blood clot or piece of atherosclerotic plaque material (the buildup of cholesterol and other fatty materials in an artery) that travels from its origin in the heart or aorta to lodge in the smaller arteries (in this case those of the intestines).
Arterial thrombus is a blood clot that forms spontaneously in the arteries or veins, including those of the intestines, blocking flow.
Sometimes flow is not blocked completely but is simply too low because of low heart output (as in heart failure or shock) or because certain drugs (such as cocaine) narrow -

Overview of gastrointestinal emergencies
Certain gastrointestinal disorders can be life threatening and require emergency treatment. For many people, emergency treatment involves surgery.
Abdominal pain, often severe, usually accompanies gastrointestinal emergencies. If a person has abdominal pain, a doctor must decide whether immediate surgery is needed to both identify and treat the problem or whether surgery can wait until diagnostic test results are available. Emergency surgery of the abdomen is often done when the abdominal pain seems to result fromAn intestinal obstruction
A ruptured or perforated (punctured) organ, such as the stomach, appendix (see Appendicitis), or intestine
A hernia with too little blood flow
A blockage of blood flow (see Acute Mesenteric Ischemia and Ischemic Colitis)
An abdominal abscess (a pus-filled pocket of infection)Not all gastrointestinal disorders are treated with surgery (see Ileus).
Gastrointestinal bleeding, which is typically painless, also can be life threatening. Doctors usually do an endoscopy (an examination of internal structures using a flexible viewing tube) to find and treat the source of bleeding. When the source of the bleeding cannot be found or treated, a surgical procedure is sometimes required. -

Overview of digestive symptoms
Disorders that affect the digestive (gastrointestinal) system are called digestive disorders. Some disorders simultaneously affect several parts of the digestive system, whereas others affect only one part or organ.
Some symptoms usually suggest a digestive disorder, such asDiarrhea
Constipation
Bleeding from the digestive tract
Regurgitation
Difficulty swallowingMore general symptoms, such as abdominal pain (see also Chronic and Recurring Abdominal Pain), passing of gas (flatulence), loss of appetite, hiccups, and nausea, may suggest a digestive disorder or another type of disorder. Chest or back pain usually suggests another type of disorder but sometimes is caused by a digestive disorder.
Indigestion is an imprecise term that is used by different people to mean different things. The term covers a wide range of symptoms, including dyspepsia, nausea and vomiting, regurgitation, and the sensation of having a lump in the throat (globus sensation). -
