The Saxifrage family, scientifically known as Saxifragaceae, is a family of flowering plants that consists of around 640 species in 33 genera. Found mostly in the northern hemisphere, these plants are typically herbs or dwarf shrubs with characteristic flowers that have a simple basic structure which ranges from 4-5 part, often with nectar at the base of the petals. The leaf arrangement is typically alternate, and the leaf blade usually has a distinct leaf stalk. The feature that is particularly characteristic of Saxifragaceae plants is their growth habit, adapting to some of the most extreme habitats on earth.
