White person, American, Englishman, Caucasian, foreign, introduced, of foreign origin.
The word haole existed before the arrival of Captain Cook. Its a very old word that appears in a story about the demigod Kamapuaa. He haole nui, maka alohilohi. Also, the word does not mean without breath. The word haole is a different word entirely.

The word haole when used on the islands has many different meanings, historically accurate or not. It is generally accepted as white person among Caucasians, but most see it as foreigner or outsider. It is a widely accepted exclusionary word based on race, justified or not.

Refrence from Hawaii meaning foreigner. This can be anyone who is not local meaning people from the mainland, tourists, or just white people. Mostly used as a term for a white person, but can mean anyone foreign.
Sometimes used as a deragotory term against white people.
Originated from Hawaii as a term for foreigners due to the fact that they refused to perform the ritual of sharing their mana through their breath, hence no breath definition.
Other times it can be used just for refrence to white people.

Haole just means foreigner. In modern usage, its come to mean white person. But its a generic term -- neither positive or negative in connotation. The word itself is NOT derogatory:
There were 5 haoles at the corner means There were 5 caucasians at the corner. Nothing more. Nothing derogatory.
But like any other noun, it can attract good adjectives (The NICE haole lady gave me this apple) or bad adjectives (The FUCKING haole lady gave me the finger). Its the adjective, not the word, that denotes whether its derogatory.
Unfortunately, there are certain oversensitive people in this life who always need to feel like victims and always need to whine about something even when theres nothing to whine about. They want everyone to think theyre being persecuted. White people persecuted? Cmon, get real. As my haole golf buddy likes to say, thats why the word fucking usually comes before the word haole.
                Its all about context:

Word that meth-addicted, illiterate, shit-for-brains locals use when they need a convenient scapegoat to blame for their impotence.
Most commonly used by hapa people with only a drop of Hawaiian blood, who somehow think they are descended from sea-faring god-kings.
Ironically, the people who use this word the most, are part haole themselves, and therefore hate themselves.
I.E. the race card... to be played whenever things dont go EXACTLY their way.
                  Its racism pure and simple.
Funny that the one of the most genetically diverse group of people is also one of the most racist.

1 The actual translation is: with out breath.
Hawaiians when greeting each other would, breath in each others breath (ha: the breath of life) When the Christians came to HI they did not do that there for they where Haole (with out breath)...
2 It has evolved to just meaning some one not born in Hawaii. Or that you are white. If you are white and born in Hawaii you are a local haole. Yes you can be black and still be a haole.
3 Also most people in Hawaii have 2 or more races more than 75% have some kind of Asian (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, or Philippino) and\or Portuguese. Which would make them Hapa-Haole. Mixed

A Hawaiian term for a white person, with the exception of Portuguese people. A haole (not to be confused with haole, meaning without breath; ha, breath ole, without) does not mean without breath, but instead means foreigner. Usually, the term haole is taken offensively by white people, as they consider it derogatory, but usually, it is not meant to be derogatory from locals from Hawaii.
Haoles do not include Asians and Pacific Islanders, and rarely refer to African Americans and Portuguese people. Some Portuguese people may take offense if you call them haole.
