It is a long, slender, and fast-moving snake, identified by its distinctive stripes running down the length of its body. They primarily feed on lizards and small rodents. The scientific name for this species is Masticophis lateralis.

Two competitors race against each other in a counterclockwise direction around an ice track, the winner being the competitor who achieves the fastest time around the track. Skaters compete in short-track and long-track events, racing in either packs of four to six or against one other. Points are awarded in relation to the skaters time in each event. The overall winner is the skater with the lowest number of points.
