A mesa is a flat-topped, elevated landform with steep sides, commonly found in arid or semi-arid regions like deserts. It is typically larger than a butte but smaller than a plateau. The term mesa is often used in the Southwestern United States and has Spanish origins, meaning table, referring to its table-like appearance.
