El Dorado
-
A name given by the Spaniards in the 16th century to an
imaginary country in the interior of South America, reputed to abound
in gold and precious stones. -
Originally the name comes from a myth from the Muisca peoples during the early [1500s] in the Andes (what is now Colombia). The myth tells of the legend of the Golden Man, or [El Dorado]. This came to be known as an actual place, an empire, where this golden king lived. There were many treacherous expeditions undertaken during the 1500s in order to find this place, true Indiana Jones styles ([Sir Walter] Raleigh tried to find it too).
