    • Webcam

The term webcam is a combination of Web and video camera. The purpose of a webcam is, not surprisingly, to broadcast video on the Web. Webcams are typically small cameras that either attach to a users monitor or sit on a desk. Most webcams connect to the computer via USB, though some use a Firewire connection. Webcams typically come with software that allows the user to record video or stream the video on the Web. If the user has a website that supports streaming video, other users can watch the video stream from their Web browsers.
Webcams can also be used for video chat sessions with other people. Instead of broadcasting the video on the Web, users can set up a video chat session with one or more friends and have a conversation with live audio and video. For example, Apples iSight camera, which is built into Apple laptops and iMacs, allows users to video chat using the iChat instant messaging program. Several other chat programs also work with webcams, allowing users to set up video chat sessions with friends.
Since streaming video over the Internet requires a lot of bandwidth, the video stream is typically compressed to reduce the choppiness of the video. The maximum resolution of a webcam is also lower than most handheld video cameras, since higher resolutions would be reduced anyway. For this reason, webcams are relatively inexpensive compared to most video cameras. And while they may not be ideal for filming a movie, webcams are great for video chat sessions with friends.

    • Unmount

Unmounting a disk makes it inaccessible by the computer. Of course, in order for a disk to be unmounted, it must first be mounted. When a disk is mounted, it is active and the computer can access its contents. Since unmounting a disk prevents the computer from accessing it, there is no risk of the disk being disconnected in the middle of a data transfer. Therefore, before removing an external data storage device, such as a USB flash drive, the disk should be unmounted to avoid possible data corruption.
Several types of disks can be unmounted, including external hard drives, USB flash drives, iPods, flash memory cards, and disk images. In order to unmount a disk in Windows, open My Computer, select the disk, and click the Eject this disk option in the left sidebar. In Mac OS X, select the disk on the desktop and either drag the disk to the trash (which changes to an Eject icon), or select File→Eject from the Finders menu bar. Once a removable disk has been unmounted, it can safely be disconnected from the computer.

    • RE: Truncate

To truncate something is to shorten it, or cut part of it off. In computer science, the term is often used in reference to data types or variables, such as floating point numbers and strings.
For example, a function may truncate the decimal portion of a floating point number to make it an integer. If the number 3.875 is truncated, it becomes 3. Note that this is different than if the number had been rounded to the nearest integer, which would be 4. Strings may also be truncated, which can be useful if a string exceeds the maximum character limit for a certain application.
Several programming languages use the function trunc() to truncate a variable. PHP uses strlen() to truncate a string to a set limit of characters.

    • Trackball

A trackball is an input device used to enter motion data into computers or other electronic devices. It serves the same purpose as a mouse, but is designed with a moveable ball on the top, which can be rolled in any direction. Instead of moving the whole device, you simply roll the moveable ball on top of the trackball unit with your hand to generate motion input.
Trackballs designed for computers generally serve as mouse replacements and are primarily used to move the cursor on the screen. Like mice, computer trackball devices also include buttons, which can serve as left-click and right-click buttons, and may also be used to enter other commands. While trackballs are most commonly used with computers, they may also be found in other electronics, such as arcade games, mixing boards, and self-serve kiosks. These devices often have trackballs that are larger than the ones used in computer input devices.
Besides the capability to be built into various devices, trackballs have a number of other advantages over mice. Some advantages include the small footprint (since they dont require a mousepad or large area to move the mouse), fingertip control (which may offer more accuracy), and improved ergonomics (since there is less strain on the wrist). Still, many people find trackballs harder to use than mice, since they feel less natural and may require practice to get used to. For this reason, the vast majority of computers include a mouse, rather than a trackball, as the default input device.

    • System Hardening

Most computers offer network security features to limit outside access to the system. Software such as antivirus programs and spyware blockers prevent malicious software from running on the machine. Yet, even with these security measures in place, computers are often still vulnerable to outside access. System hardening, also called Operating System hardening, helps minimize these security vulnerabilities.
The purpose of system hardening is to eliminate as many security risks as possible. This is typically done by removing all non-essential software programs and utilities from the computer. While these programs may offer useful features to the user, if they provide back-door access to the system, they must be removed during system hardening.
Advanced system hardening may involve reformatting the hard disk and only installing the bare necessities that the computer needs to function. The CD drive is listed as the first boot device, which enables the computer to start from a CD or DVD if needed. File and print sharing are turned off if not absolutely necessary and TCP/IP is often the only protocol installed. The guest account is disabled, the administrator account is renamed, and secure passwords are created for all user logins. Auditing is enabled to monitor unauthorized access attempts.
While these steps are often part of operating system hardening, system administrators may choose to perform other tasks that boost system security. While both Macintosh and Windows operating systems can be hardened, system hardening is more often done on Windows machines, since they are more likely to have their security compromised.

    • Spyware

As the name implies, this is software that spies on your computer. Nobody likes to be spied on, and your computer doesnt like it either. Spyware can capture information like Web browsing habits, e-mail messages, usernames and passwords, and credit card information. If left unchecked, the software can transmit this data to another persons computer over the Internet.
So how does spyware get on your computer? Just like viruses, spyware can be installed when you open an e-mail attachment containing the malicious software. It can also be installed when you install another program that has a spyware installer attached to it. Because of the insidious nature of spyware, most people dont even know when spyware is on their computer. Fortunately, you can purchase anti-spyware utilities that will search for spyware on your computer and stomp the unwanted software out of your system. A good way to prevent spyware from infecting your computer is to install a security program that lets you know when any program is being installed, so that you can choose to authorize or stop the installation.

    • Social Media

Social media is a collection of Internet-based communities that allow users to interact with each other online. This includes web forums, wikis, and user-generated content (UGC) websites. However, the term is most often used to describe popular social networking websites, which include the following:
Social media became popular after the advent of Web 2.0, a collection of web-based technologies used to make websites more dynamic and enable greater user interaction. It has since been fueled by the growing use of mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones, which are commonly used to access social media services. In fact, most social media websites also provide custom apps that make it easy to view and post updates while on-the-go.
The growth of social media has also lead to another new industry, called social media marketing. This refers to promotional methods focused on social media rather than traditional advertising outlets. The goal of social media marketing is to increase awareness of a product or service by prompting users to like, share, recommend, or 1 a product or service. For example, phrases such as Like us on Facebook or Follow us on Twitter encourage users to promote a product or service online.
