Originally created during the 1920's gentlemen's clubs; when it was illegal for women to smoke. So, men would find arousal of a woman taking a long-draw of a pipe, cigar, cigarette, etc.

As well, the scenes in these clubs would be filled with smoke of the members. Thus the "smoke and mirrors" affect, that we know so well in Hollywood ,was immersed.
