A bird of the genus Anastomus, allied to the stork; -- socalled because the two parts of the bill touch only at the base andtip. One species inhabits India, another Africa. Called also open-beak. See Illust. (m), under Beak.

Either of two snail-eating storks of the genus Anastomus, A. lamelligerus of Africa and A. oscitans of Asia, which have mandibles that only meet at the tips, leaving a wide gap in the middle of the closed bill.
