Furlough is a temporary leave of absence or suspension from work, granted to an employee often due to special needs of a company or employer, or in situations like a government shutdown. During a furlough, the employee typically retains their job and may continue to receive benefits, but they usually stop receiving pay or receive reduced pay.

In the United States, a furlough is a temporary unpaid leave of some employees due to special needs of a company, which may be due to economic conditions at the specific employer or in the economy as a whole. These involuntary furloughs may be short or long term, and many of those affected may seek other temporary employment during that time.

The term is usually applied to the absence with leave of non-commissioned officers and other enlisted men, and may be granted at the discretion of the commanding officer.
