A blouse is a loose-fitting upper garment that may be worn by workmen, peasants, artists, women, and children. It is typically gathered at the waist or hips so that it hangs loosely (blouses) over the wearers body. Today, the word most commonly refers to a girls or womans dress shirt, although there is considerable confusion between a true blouse and a womens shirt. It can also refer to a mans shirt if it is a loose-fitting style, though it rarely is. Traditionally, the term has been used to refer to a shirt which blouses out or has an unmistakably feminine appearance, although even many standard shirts today have a somewhat blousy fit, and the numbers of men wearing such shirts may match that of women wearing actual blouses.

Blouses are a type of clothing that was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were a combination of trousers and shirts, with separate pockets for the legs. They were made of a cotton or linen fabric and could be worn in different colors. Blouses were often seen as a fashionable and practical alternative to the restrictive corsets worn in earlier times. The term bloue is believed to have originated from the Dutch word bloed meaning blood, which was the color of a new pair of pants. The popularity and fashionability of blouses continued until the end of the 19th century.
