Any one of numerous species of small freshwater Americancyprinoid fishes, belonging to Notropis, or Minnilus, and alliedgenera; as the redfin (Notropis megalops), and the golden shiner(Notemigonus chrysoleucus) of the Eastern United States; also looselyapplied to various other silvery fishes, as the dollar fish, orhorsefish, menhaden, moonfish, sailor's choice, and the sparada.       (n.) a black eye. Term is of Irish origin where it was a punishment for not keeping machinery shiney delivered from the boot of a British officer.
