This is the legal definition of obscene in the USA:
The average person, applying contemporary community standards would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the [prurient] interest (sexual desires)
AND
The work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, [sexual conduct] specifically defined by the applicable state law
AND
The work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value
ALL THREE [criteria] must be met in order to be obscene. Also note that something that is obscene in one place may not be considered obscene somewhere else. This test is called the Miller test.
