An ecclesiastical body or judicatory in certain churches,
as the Reformed Dutch. It is intermediate between the consistory and
the synod, and corresponds to the presbytery in the Presbyterian
church.

In the Presbyterian system: an ecclesiastical court or assembly above the consistory and below the synod consisting of the elders or pastors from each parish or congregation within a given area. Formerly also occasionally: †a parochial court, a consistory (obsolete). Compare class, presbytery.
