If you have been on Twitter, you may have seen a hashtag. To put it simply, a hash tag is simply a way for people to search for tweets that have a common topic and to begin a conversation. For example, if you search on #LOST (or #Lost or #lost, because its not case-sensitive), youll get a list of tweets related to the TV show. What you wont get are tweets that say I lost my wallet yesterday because lost isnt preceded by the hash tag.
Hashtags believed to have originated on Twitter but, interestingly enough, it is not a Twitter function. Some believe it began when the broken plane luckily landed in the Hudson River in early 2009, some Twitter user wrote a post and added #flight1549 to it. I have no idea who this person was, but somebody else would have read it and when he posted something about the incident, added #flight1549 to HIS tweet. For something like this, where tweets would have been flying fast and furiously, it wouldnt have taken long for this hash tag to go viral and suddenly thousands of people posting about it would have added it to their tweets as well. Then, if you wanted info on the situation, you could do a search on #flight1549 and see everything that people had written about it.

The ugliest word ever used to describe this poor little guy right here ->(#)

Yet another social network fad that teaches young Americans to not write in full, understandable, proper sentences.

The process of trying to unload your drugs on your friends when you are pulled over by the police. Whoever you throw the drugs to then tries to throw the drugs to another friend similar to the childhood game of Hot Potato. The game ends when the cop walks up to the car window.

Hashtag-Noun. Spawned from the ever powerful Twitter Machine, this symbol (#) has become a new way to add a thought, or some up the thought of, a sentence, giving it more clarity, and often, more wit. Most commonly found in tweets, FB status, and comments (in that order)

A hashtag is a number symbol (#) used to label keywords in a tweet. The name hashtag was coined by Twitter and combines the word hash (another name for the number symbol) and tag, since it is used to tag certain words. In order to tag a keyword in a Twitter post, simply type a number symbol (Shift 3) immediately before the word. For example, you can tag the word tech in a tweet by typing #tech.
Twitter automatically turns hashtagged words into links to a dynamic feed. This feed is updated in real-time and lists all recent tweets containing the same hashtag. When you post a tweet with a hashtag, your tweet will show up in the public feed. Besides clicking on hashtags within tweets, you can also search for hashtags using Twitters search feature.
Hashtags are used to categorize tweets, since all tweets with the same hashtag are related. Therefore, searching for hashtags is a good way to monitor hot topics or trends. For example, #marchmadness is popular during the March NCAA tournament, while #election might be popular during political elections. Company names, such as #apple and #microsoft, are common hashtagged terms and may be used when people comment on new product releases. As people post tweets with the same hashtag, the corresponding feed can easily turn into a discussion.
A hashtag can be any word or combination or words and can also include numbers. You can use trending hashtags in your tweets or make up your own. However, it is best to use popular hashtags if you want others to see your tweet. Each Twitter post can include multiple hashtags, though Twitter discourages spamming tweets with hashtags and recommends using no more than three hashtags per tweet. It is common to include hashtags at the end of a tweet, but you can hashtag any word by simply adding a number symbol in front of it.

A hash or pound sign (#) used after a word or phrase to label content and make it easier to find. Hashtags are common on social media and used to connect posts on related topics. For example, if you click #Mailchimp on Twitter, it will bring up a list of tweets that include that hashtag. Hashtags can combine multiple words and are often styled with internal capitalization so they’re #MuchEasierToRead.
