Tonsilla is the Latin term for tonsil, which refers to a small mass of lymphoid tissue situated in the throat area. They are part of the immune system and help defend the body against harmful bacteria and viruses that can enter the body via the mouth or throat. In humans, there are usually four types: palatine, tubal, pharyngeal (commonly known as adenoids), and lingual tonsils.
