the innermost layer of the epidermis
-
The rete Malpighii is a layer of the skin also known as the stratum germinativum or stratum malpighii. It is the innermost layer of the epidermis where cellular division takes place and new cells are formed, which then migrate to the outer layers of the skin. Named after its discoverer, the Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi, the rete malpighii is responsible for skins regenerative properties.
