A word denoted to the gaps in our memory that we fill in with a plausable but yet imagined memory.
And no, it's different to a hallucination, as a confabulation can only be retrospective (hallucinations are happening at the time)

When looking for a definition of any term, it is necessary to differentiate between the unconscious [feel-think] version created by an unwitting--a term coined by James LaFerla in his best-selling book “Conscious Neuroplastic Mediation: The Next Step in the Evolution of Human Consciousness” (2018)--and the conscious version. The term [confabulation] was previously improperly defined by those who, due to their feel-think, were unable to see it for what it truly is. Their lack of consciousness and inability to be objective caused them to imagine it is extremely rare and that most known cases of confabulation are symptomatic of brain damage or dementia. In fact, most people would have an extremely difficult time getting through their day without [confabulating].
Its prior definition referred to it as a memory error. It’s not. It’s something that happens because those who feel-think are unaware of their true motivations. They are acting unconsciously on autopilot. They regularly feel-think and then act in ways that are completely reflexive, dysfunctional, and irrational, then find themselves needing to make sense of and explain their actions…that is confabulation and it happens quite frequently.
