Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver characterized by diffuse or patchy necrosis. Hepatitis may be acute or chronic (usually defined as lasting gt; 6 months). Most cases of acute viral hepatitis resolve spontaneously, but some progress to chronic hepatitis.
