Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy is an immune-mediated polyneuropathy characterized by symmetric weakness of proximal and distal muscles and by progression continuing greater than 2 months.
(See also Overview of Peripheral Nervous System Disorders.)
Symptoms of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) resemble those of Guillain-Barr#233; syndrome. However, progression for gt; 2 months differentiates CIDP from Guillain-Barr#233; syndrome, which is monophasic and self-limited. CIDP develops in 2 to 5% of patients initially diagnosed with Guillain-Barr#233; syndrome.
The cause is thought to be autoimmune, resulting in demyelination.
