Relay Events in Track Events - Relay Events. In athletics, relay races are run for both men and women over 100m (4 x 100m) and 400m (4 x 400m). Each relay team consists of four competitors. A baton is passed from one team member to another in succession, and the team that completes the race first is the winner. In the 4 x 100m, the race is run strictly in lanes; in the 4 x 400m, however, only the first leg is run in lanes, and on the second and subsequent legs the runners are allowed to break to the inside lane once the first bend has been run. The team in the lead at each changeover point is allowed to take the inside lane.
