A genus of cucurbitaceous plants consisting of the singlespecies Ecballium agreste (or Elaterium), the squirting cucumber. Itsfruit, when ripe, bursts and violently ejects its seeds, togetherwith a mucilaginous juice, from which elaterium, a powerful catharticmedicine, is prepared.
