This is basically where, out of a group of friends, one friend has been thrown out due to whatever action.
This comes from the idea where when making a cake (of friendship), all the good stuff (the good friends) go through the [sieve] into the mixture, while the bad, fatty stuff (said friend to be thrown out) is stuck in the sieve, ready to be thrown [in the bin].
