Boricua goes back centuries. The island was called Boriken by the native Taínos. Boricua was derived from Boriken - most likely coined by early colonial Spaniards. All those names Boricua, Borinquen, Borincano, Borinqueño - are very old Puerto Rican terminology found in old Puerto Rican history books, and poems that are over 200 years old, etc. If you have not studied in Puerto Rico and read these words in our own Spanish literature (in school textbooks) and native poems then you might think of them as foreign but they are not. You are right they are not proper Castellano, but only Spaniards speak proper Castellano. These terms are actually criollo - developed in the island. They are true Puerto Rican terminology.)

Puerto Rican. Not always having to be from Puerto Rico. Doesnt have to be full Puerto Rican. Usually Puerto Rican girls are referred to as Boricuas. Or from wut Puerto Rico was, Boriquen.

Hi Sarah, pray you are doing well and in good health. To the point, Boricua is not a synonym to Puerto Rican for both words are not kin to each other in language not even as an identifier to its people, however, in the general society it has been accepted as such on the island, the USA, and the world. Taino is not Spanish as Spanish is not Taino. First, Puerto Rico in Spanish means Rich Port.
Second, Boricua in Taino means through my study of the island's history 'Land of the Noble God' and now that I have looked up the word again it is now define as 'Valiant People, therefore, I ask, ' How would you like to be known as a Rich Port or an
People/sons and daughters of the Noble God?'
