An acute disease, almost exclusively infantile, characterizedby inflammation of the anterior horns of the gray substance of thespinal cord. It is attended with febrile symptoms, motor paralysis,and muscular atrophy, often producing permanent deformities. Calledalso acute anterior poliomyelitis.
