In Greek mythology, Peneus was a Thessalian river god, one of the three thousand Rivers, a child of Oceanus and Tethys. The nymph Creusa bore him one son, Hypseus, who was King of the Lapiths, and three daughters, Menippe, Daphne and Stilbe. He also had a son Atrax with Bura, and Andreus with an unknown consort. Tricce, eponym of the city Tricca, was mentioned as his daughter. Some sources state that he was the father of Cyrene, alternately known as his granddaughter through Hypseus. Daphne, in an Arcadian version of the myth, was, instead, the daughter of the river god Ladon.
Eros shot Apollo with one of his arrows, causing him to fall in love with Daphne. It was Eross plan that Daphne would scorn Apollo because Eros was angry that Apollo had made fun of his archery skills. Eros also claimed to be irritated by Apollos singing. Daphne prayed to the river god Peneus to help her. He changed her into a laurel tree, which later became sacred to Apollo - see Apollo and Daphne.

Peneus is a term found in Greek mythology representing two different entities.

        1. It is the name of a river god, who is considered the god of the Thessalian river with the same name. Peneus is one of the three thousand sons of Titans Oceanus and Tethys.

        2. Peneus is also the name of a river located in Thessaly, Greece, which was associated with its mythological counterpart. It is the largest river in Thessaly and one of the most significant rivers in Greece.
