Genus Spalax, commonly known as blind mole rats, make up a group of rodent species primarily found in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and parts of Asia. These rodents are known for their highly adapted subterranean lifestyle, characterized by features such as a cylindrical body shape, reduced eyes covered by skin, strong forelimbs for digging, and absence of externally visible ears. They primarily feed on plant roots. Interestingly, species within the Spalax genus have unusually high resistance to cancer.
