Arthur Compton was an American physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927 for his discovery of the Compton Effect. His work significantly contributed to the development of quantum mechanics and confirmed the dual nature of electromagnetic radiation as both particles and waves. The Compton Effect demonstrated the particle nature of light and resulted in a shift in wavelength after photons collided with electrons. He also contributed to the field of cosmic radiation which later led to the development of nuclear physics. During World War II, he was a key figure in the Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb.
