An alkaloid found in henbane (Hyoscyamus niger), and regardedas its active principle. It is also found with other alkaloids in thethorn apple and deadly nightshade. It is extracted as a whitecrystalline substance, with a sharp, offensive taste. Hyoscyamine isisomeric with atropine, is very poisonous, and is used as a medicinefor neuralgia, like belladonna. Called also hyoscyamia, duboisine,etc.

Hyoscyamine (also known as daturine or duboisine) is a naturally occurring tropane alkaloid and plant toxin. It is a secondary metabolite found in certain plants of the family Solanaceae, including henbane, mandrake, angels trumpets, jimsonweed, the sorcerers tree, and deadly nightshade.
