Equisetum hyemale, commonly known as rough horsetail or scouring rush, is a perennial plant species in the Equisetaceae (horsetail) family. It is characterized by its green, reed-like stems that are segmented, rough in texture, and can grow up to 1-2 meters tall. Unlike many plants, Equisetum hyemale does not have leaves or flowers. Instead, it reproduces through spores released from cones at the top of the stems. This plant is often found in wet environments like marshes, forests, or riverbanks. Its stems have been traditionally used for scouring and polishing because of their high silica content.
