A poliovirus vaccine is a pharmaceutical product used to prevent the occurrence of poliomyelitis (polio), caused by poliovirus. There are two types of polio vaccines - inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) and oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV). IPV is administered through injections and offers protection by introducing an inactivated or killed virus into the body, stimulating the bodys immune system. OPV, taken orally, contains weakened poliovirus which triggers the immune system to produce antiviral antibodies. Both types serve to establish and boost immunity against all three types of poliovirus.
