Aetiology refers to the study of how a disease or condition is caused. It involves identifying the specific factors or events that led to its development. In other words, aetiology is the science of cause and effect. For example, if you develop a cough due to allergies or exposure, then the cause of your cough is allergies. The specific factors that led to your cough, such as exposure and sensitivity of the airways to allergens, are what we refer to as the aetiology of your cough.
