A cap of maintenance. See Maintenance. Chapeau bras ( Etym: [F.chapeau hat bras arm], a hat so made that it can be compressed andcarried under the arm without injury. Such hats were particularlyworn on dress occasions by gentlemen in the 18th century. A chapeaubras is now worn in the United States army by general and staffofficers.

Aside from meaning 'hat' it is also used when giving someone respect, a short way of saying 'hat off' or 'I'm so impressed, I take my hat off'.
