a stuffy college professor word that describes when you use part of an object to refer to the whole object. If you call you gun a nine, or refer to a guy who is mean as a dick, thats synecodche. Like most college professor words, it is originally greek, transferred into Latin and then imported into english.

a word or phrase in which a part of something is used to refer to the whole of it, for example a pair of hands for a worker, or the whole of something is used to refer to a part, for example the law for a police officer

A figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa, as in Cleveland won by six runs (meaning “Clevelands baseball team”).
