The term is derived form the noun pilot and defines the act of [piloting] an aircraft or a vessel. The term pilotage refers to the act of maneuvering in a safe manner. The term is therefore used mainly to define someone doing the safe thing. It may refer to someone [coasting] through something or simply keeping themselves safe by [flying under the radar].
