The action of travelling over snow on skis, especially as a sport or recreation. Competitive skiing falls into two categories: Nordic (cross-country racing, jumping, and biathlon) and Alpine (downhill or straight racing, and slalom racing round a series of markers).

Skiing in Skiing. Skiing is divided into three categories: Alpine, Nordic and freestyle. Alpine includes downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super-G races and the Alpine combined event. Nordic skiing includes cross-country ski jumping and the Nordic combined event. Freestyle includes aerials, mogul skiing and ballet.
