Redbone is a person with red undertones in their skin. A person who is a yellow bone has yellow undertones in their skin. If you look closely at their skin you can see the differences.

A redbone can be a light-skinned african american or a person of mixed races meaning they have African American in them...mixed with others ethnic races!

Okay this is the real, real deal folks.
Redbone, the correct terminology, is a black person who has red undertones in their hair and skin. Usually light or light caramel but not always. They just have reddish hair and skin.
BUT!!! Its NOW used to describe a particular look that occurs in African Americans. Each culture has their own term for this look. In Cuba its: Haba or mulatto. Usually light light complexion.
However, The term TODAY, is used in Black culture for any light, super high yellow girl/woman, mulatto looking woman who is Black(Not Latina, etc). If she is mixed, but still looks traditionally black and mixed w/white(Not the Asian and Black look)she may still be called redbone, but its used to describe a Black Woman(who can HAVE 2 black parents) who happens to be extremely light.
You can call a guy redbone too but its been used so much to describe light skinned women that it wouldnt be used quite right in everyday vernacular, although technically youd be right.Nowadays it has too many sexual overtones for light light women.
Term is used heavily in the south.
I am considered a redbone and I get called this all the time simply because I am a woman, and Black, but lighter than most Black people in America.

A specific brown-to-reddish skinned people of Louisiana with dark eyes and straight, frizzy or curly hair. They are often thought of as a tri-racial people of Native American, African and some form of Eastern or Western European heritage. Redbones are not neccesarily Creole or Cajun--they traditionally speak English.

@tanya-shivari you are lying . You are clearly an Asian female. The term red bone is for lighter skin to caramel females of black race. Even if you had a dash of black DNA this does not refer to you. Because you are not of black race. I can say this because I am ACTUALLY a Red Bone Black Female.

A Redbone is a person with red skin AND red hair. We are not caramel colored. I've never seen red caramel before, lol. But seriously, someone with RED skin and RED hair is a Redbone.
