A colorless volatile liquid, CHCl3, having an ethereal odor anda sweetish taste, formed by treating alcohol with chlorine and analkali. It is a powerful solvent of wax, resin, etc., and isextensively used to produce anæsthesia in surgical operations; alsoexternally, to alleviate pain.

A heavy liquid (CHCl3) which, when vapors are inhaled, causes strong anesthetic effects. Thought to be carcinogenic, toxic to the heart and liver. Abuse can cause sudden death.

Chloroform is chemically called Trichloro methane. It is carcinogenic if inhaled in excessive amounts and hence is not widely used on humans. It is used as an anesthetic mainly in pharma laboratories on mice.
