First down

First down in American Football. The starting point of an offensive series. On first down, the offensive team has four plays to gain 10 yards. If the offensive team games the 10 yards, it returns to the first down and has another four plays to gain 10 yards. This repeats until the offense scores, turns the ball over to the defense (through a fumble or interception) or punts.
