Starting blocks in Track Events - General Terms. Allowed only in races up to and including 400m. Competitors have the choice of whether to use them or not. All starting blocks must be made of rigid materials and have no springs or other artificial devices to aid a competitor. They must be fixed to the track, and when the athlete is in position both hands must be in contact with the floor.
