Starting orders in Track Events - General Terms. For races up to and including the 400m, the starting command is as follows On your mark, Set, and then the gun shot signals Go. For distances greater than the 400m, the starting command is On your marks, which is the signal for the competitors to approach the starting line without actually touching it. Once the steady position has been assumed by all the competitors, the gun is fired to signal Go.
