The term pinup was coined during World War II when [American] [soldiers] would pin pictures, usually drawings and sometimes photos, of beautiful women to thier bunks or in thier aircraft. Today, the term pinup girl refers to models for publications like [Playboy] and [Maxim]. However, there is an underground culture of retro-inspired pinup girls that still dress and model like the original pinup pictures. Pinup models, past and present, are all major [sex symbols] like Betty Grable and [Marilyn] [Monroe], and famous pinup artists include Vargas and Elvgren.
