A poisonous alkaloid obtained from the root hellebore(Veratrum) and from sabadilla seeds as a white crystalline powder,having an acrid, burning taste. It is sometimes used externally, asin ointments, in the local treatment of neuralgia and rheumatism.Called also veratria, and veratrina.
