The phallic symbol under which Siva is principally
worshiped in his character of the creative and reproductive power. -
[Lingam] (Sanskrit for shaft of light) is the term for the Hindu god Shiva as represented by a phallus (erect male organ). Usually found in conjunction with [the Yoni] (vulva) which represents the goddess [Shakti] - the source of Creative Energy. They co-join to form Bhrama - the Universe. This is the Hindu Trilogy; the representation of the twins of Creation and Destruction as the highest manifestations or aspects of the One (Bhrama).
-
The aniconic representation of Lord [Shiva] in Hinduism. Shiva of the highest level is limitless, formless, [transcendental] and beyond human perception. Shiva is therefore worshipped by a formless mark, the lingam. The popular Hindu connotation associated with lingam is that of a [pillar] of fire from which Shiva arose. The connotation professed in the West is that of the human male organ.
