Zonary refers to anything that is arranged or appearing in bands or zones, particularly patterns or structures found in nature. It could also refer to an event or phenomenon occurring in a stripe or belt-like shape. The term is often used in the fields of botany, zoology, and biology. In zoology, for example, it describes the type of placenta in animals that is characterized by a broad, encircling zone.

The common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), also known as the waterhen or swamp chicken, is a bird species in the rail family (Rallidae). It is distributed across many parts of the Old World. The common moorhen lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals and other wetlands. The species is not found in the polar regions or many tropical rainforests. Elsewhere it is likely the most common rail species, except for the Eurasian coot in some regions. The closely related common gallinule of the New World has been recognized as a separate species by most authorities, starting with the American Ornithologists Union and the International Ornithological Committee in 2011.

Pristidae refers to a family of rays, commonly known as sawfishes, within the class of chondrichthyes. These creatures are characterized by their long, narrow, flattened rostrum, or nose extension, lined with sharp transverse teeth which are arranged to resemble a saw. They are found in tropical and subtropical waters in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific oceans. All species of sawfish are listed as endangered or critically endangered, largely as a result of overfishing and habitat loss.

Afforestation is the establishment of a forest or stand of trees (forestation) in an area where there was no previous tree cover. Many government and non-governmental organizations directly engage in afforestation programs to create forests and increase carbon capture. Afforestation is an increasingly sought-after method to fight climate concerns, as it is known to increase the soil quality and organic carbon levels into the soil, avoiding desertification. Afforestation is mainly done for conservational and commercial purposes. The rate of net forest loss decreased substantially over the period 1990–2020 due to a reduction in deforestation in some countries, plus increases in forest area in others through afforestation and the natural expansion of forests. A 2019 study of the global potential for tree restoration showed that there is space for at least 9 million km2 of new forests worldwide, which is a 25% increase from current conditions. This forested area could store up to 205 gigatons of carbon or 25% of the atmospheres current carbon pool by reducing CO2 in the atmosphere and introducing more O2.

The family Membracidae, commonly referred to as treehoppers, is a group of insects known for their unique, often elaborate shapes. These insects are part of the order Hemiptera, usually small to medium in size and often mimic plant elements to avoid predators. They are typically found in forests, grasslands, and gardens, and are found across the world except Antarctica. Many species feed on plant sap, and some are known for their mutualistic relationships with ants.

A lunisolar system or calendar is a type of calendar that is based on both lunar and solar cycles, meaning it accounts for the phases of the moon and the position of the Sun. This means that the dates indicate both the moon phase and the time of the solar year. It is used in many traditional calendars around the world, including the Hebrew, Chinese, and Hindu calendars.

A botanical garden is a well-tended area displaying a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names. It may contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular parts of the world, and so on; there may be greenhouses, shadehouses, again with special collections such as tropical plants, alpine plants, or other exotic plants. Visitor services at a botanical garden might include tours, educational displays, art exhibitions, book rooms, open-air theatrical and musical performances, and other entertainment. Botanical gardens are often run by universities or other scientific research organizations, and often have associated herbaria and research programmes in plant taxonomy or some other aspect of botanical science. In principle, their role is to maintain documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display, and education, although this will depend on the resources available and the special interests pursued at each particular garden. The origin of modern botanical gardens can be traced to European medieval medicinal gardens known as physic gardens, the first of these being founded during the Italian Renaissance in the 16th century. This early concern with medicinal plants changed in the 17th century to an interest in the new plant imports from explorations outside Europe as botany gradually established its independence from medicine. In the 18th century, systems of nomenclature and classification were devised by botanists working in the herbaria and universities associated with the gardens, these systems often being displayed in the gardens as educational order beds. With the rapid rise of European imperialism in the late 18th century, botanic gardens were established in the tropics, and economic botany became a focus with the hub at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, near London.
