It was designed to create an instant clearing in dense vegetation or to create a psychological impact on the enemy due to its large blast radius. It was often used during the Vietnam War and in the Gulf War. The BLU-82 contains 6,800 kg of GSX Slurry (ammonium nitrate, aluminum powder and polystyrene) and was, until 1991, the largest conventional bomb in existence.
