An acid-base indicator which is colorless in acid solution, but turns pink to red as the solution becomes alkaline. It is used medicinally as a cathartic.

A process in photographic printing, in which a
relief pattern in gelatin, which has been hardened after certain
operations, is pressed upon a plate of lead or other soft metal. An
intaglio impression in thus produced, from which pictures may be
directly printed, but by a slower process than in common printing.
